Galaxy S6 Edge SM-G925I Official 5.1.1 Lollipop Update now available,1st build version is G925IDVU2COF8

The Galaxy S6 Edge SM-G925I has followed the Galaxy S6 SM-G920I on getting its first official Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update. Samsung has also started sending out the latter's 5.1.1 Lollipop update which came around with build number G925IDVU2COF8 (LMY47X). The update is now being held available in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, which is mostly only in Asian countries for now. But maybe soon enough, the update might be also available in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and through the rest of Latin America region of which particularly the Galaxy S6 Edge SM-G925I was sold.

Moreover, aside from bumping up the device OS version to Android 5.1.1  there are also some quite few changes the update could bring. This includes the exposure slider which is now added in the camera apps. There is also an "A to Z" button that allows the Galaxy S6 Edge users to sort the apps drawer in alphabetical manner. Some other features of the Lollipop 5.1.1 like the multi-user support called "Guest Mode" is not yet enabled in the update but might be available soon on other future updates.

Here goes the technical details of the G925IDVU2COF8 5.1.1 update. You can find this info in the device Settings>About device once you receive this particular OS update.

Model number: SM-G925I
Android version: 5.0.2
Baseband version: G925IDVU2COF8
Kernel version: 3.10.61-5228538
Build number: LMY47X.G925IDVU2COF8

Again this G925IDVU2COF8 Lollipop 5.1.1 update is now only available in Asian countries except for Singapore as they might get another build version. Among the rest of the Galaxy S6 Edge G925I owners like in Australia, New Zealand and Latin America might still need to wait patiently for a while. The update usually rolls out in phases, it might be slow or might be delayed so not everyone may see the update at the same time. Yo may better check the availability of the update manually, either by checking firmware update over the air or by using Smart Switch.

How to Update the Galaxy S6 Edge to Official Android 5.1.1 Lollipop

Just follow these guide on how to keep your Galaxy S6 Edge in a much safer way while performing software update.  I also added some useful insights and why you should follow this procedures.

First and foremost make sure to recharge your Galaxy S6 Edge – While performing software update on Galaxy S6 Edge it may only takes just a couple of minutes but sometimes it may take longer. It will depend on how small or large the update size is, but most cases it also affects the speed of your data connection. Slower WiFi data connection may take longer while a stronger data connection is more speedy. A 40% to 50% recharged battery is enough but a fully recharged is way much better. Since we cannot determine how what the exact time we need to consume when initiating the firmware update so we should make sure our device has still enough battery remaining power to avoid any fatal issues. Have you ever heard or encountered those fellas who ended their devices into soft-bricks? A device was just stuck on Samsung logo or welcome screen and can’t reboot normally, those are what we called soft-bricks. And most probably caused by an inadequate battery power while performing the software update.

Do not forget to back up all of the important data – Even though there are no any data that are going to be deleted right after performing software update. But what if the software update went wrong, the update unexpectedly fails and then the phone becomes unresponsive and then it forces you to perform a wipe data/factory that basically wipes your phone’s memory storage just to resolve the issue. So you should backup your important files, including contacts, messages, call log, photos, videos, music, and apps. You cannot recover these files if somehow accidentally deleted when the software update goes wrong.

Your Galaxy S6 Edge must still runs on the official software version and hasn’t been rooted nor installed with non-official firmware update – Just in-case you just need to know that a rooted and a modified Galaxy S6 Edge will not get official software update anymore from Samsung and either to which carrier providers it came from. It will not allow users to install the update as it might harm the device once the update has made. So a rooted and modified Galaxy S6 Edge users usually receives this warning message instead, that says: ‘The operating system on your device has been modified in an unauthorized way. Try downloading software updates using Smart Switch on your computer or visit a customer service center.‘.

Update the Galaxy S6 Edge via Firmware Over-The-Air (OTA)

Galaxy S6 software over the air update

This is the usual method on how to check and to perform an update on Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge to the latest software version.  This method is what we called Firmware Update  Over-The-Air and so-called as FOTA or simply OTA update. In most often cases a notification message will directly sent to you by your network provider and by Samsung itself, telling you that there is a new update that has now available for download.  This approach requires you to prepare a strong WiFi connection,  and so it might happened sometimes that one did not receive any software update notification messages; 1) if and when the device is out of range during the software update roll out  period, 2) Automatic update has been turned off in the device Settings.
However, We can still manually check for the update instead.
Here’s how to do it manually:
  • From your Galaxy S6 Edge Home screen tap on Apps.
  • Select the Settings gear icon.
  • Tap About device.
  • Tap Software update.
  • Tap Check for update.

It will then notify you that a new update is available for download. But it also says that “Your device software is up to date“, and there is no software update is yet available for grab. You can simply choose Download and Install now if you do so or else Install later if you want to get the update in later time.

But if ever you might have had receive this message while checking software update that says something like “The operating system on your device has been modified in an unauthorized way. Try downloading software updates using Smart Switch on your computer or visit a customer service center.”  This is a warning message that only appears for those devices that has been rooted and installed with modified and unofficial firmware.  So to be able to get the Software OTA update again, you must Unroot your Galaxy S6 first and removed any modification that has been installed on it.

You can use Smart Switch to update your Galaxy S6 Edge software to the latest versions.  It can also be used if the Software Over-The-Air update fail for some reason. The Smart Switch is way similar to the before Samsung Kies that had been used on several devices.

5. Select the “Backup” button, to safely kept your important data and files such as contacts, messages, call log, videos, music, photos, application and more.  The back up data files will be stored in the  documents folder of your computer. This is a very important steps as it wipes out all of it while performing the software update process. All data will permanently deleted and it cannot be recovered, so ensure to create a backup first before it’s too late than sorry.

6. Click on the “More” button again.  Choose “Emergency software recovery and initialization” in the drop-down option.

Choose the “Software Update and Initialization” tab.
Wait for a couple of seconds as it check the current software version of your Galaxy S6 Edge and then check for the latest software update version to initialized.  You may then simply follow the on-screen instructions that ask you to click the “OK” or a “Cancel”button.

Once the Software update initialization started you must not  interrupt the process like unplugging  the data cable connected to the computer nor turning off the device. You must wait until it says “Software update and Initialization are complete”.

Once your Galaxy S6 Edge reboots disconnect it from the computer. Then reconnect it back again.

Another Android  5.1.1 Lollipop update arrived on Galaxy S6 Edge (SM-G925F) dubbed with build version G925FXXU2BOFM.  The latter is now officially sends out by Samsung to those who owns the unbranded Galaxy S6 Edge in Netherlands. Looking at the firmware build itself, it  is quite seems very similar build to the recent  G925FXXU2BOFJ  5.1.1 version that has just been rolled out in European region. Noting that Netherlands hasn't  received the former 5.1.1 update so this could be their own version next to the previous Android 5.0.2 G925FXXU1AOE3, but it has the same Lollipop features you may find on it.

Here's what the technical details says about the G925FXXU2BOFM 5.1.1 update:

Device name: Galaxy S6 Edge
Model number: SM-G925F
Android version: 5.1.1
Baseband version: G925FXXU2BOFJ
Kernel Version: 3.10.61-5012324
Build Number: LMY47X.G925FXXU2BOFM
other info:
Build date: June 22,  2015
AP: G925FXXU2BOFM
CSC: G925FPHN2BOFM
CP: G925FXXU2BOFJ

The G925FXXU2BOFM Android 5.1.1 update is held available via Over-The-Air (OTA) update which weighs a hefty files size of around 700 MB. It can also be downloaded using  Smart Switch if you want to manually upgrade by connecting your Galaxy S6 Edge into a  computer.  Again, the update is now only available for unbranded or unlocked Galaxy S6 Edge users in The Netherlands.

How to update on Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge SM-G925F to Lollipop 5.1.1

Follow these important steps before performing the software update. There are also some useful insights and why you should follow this procedures to safely keep your Galaxy S6 Edge in a much safer way while performing software update.

Ensure your Galaxy S6 Edge is recharge – While performing software update on Galaxy S6 Edge it may only takes just a couple of minutes but sometimes it may take longer.

So a rooted and modified Galaxy S6 Edge usually receives this warning message instead, that says: ‘The operating system on your device has been modified in an unauthorized way. Try downloading software updates using Smart Switch on your computer or visit a customer service center.‘.

Update the Galaxy S6 Edge via Firmware Over-The-Air (OTA)

This is the usual method on how to check and to perform an update on S6 Edge to the latest software version.

  • In your Galaxy S6 Edge Home screen tap on Apps.

So to be able to get the Software OTA update again, you must unroot your Galaxy S6 Edge first and removed any modification that has been installed on it.

Sprint Galaxy S6 Edge gets new Lollipop 5.1.1 update that bumps up the build version to G925PVPU2BOF7. The update  has officially rolled out along with  Sprint Galaxy S6 (SM-G920P). The Android 5.1.1 update comes with several enhancements, bug fixes and further improvements to performance.  Along with it is the new OEM unlocking feature which is the device protection called Anti-theft.

The OEM unlocking is the so-called “boot loader” locked and unlocked feature. This feature is now added in the device security settings, which basically allows the S6 Edge owners to decide either to turn it ON or not. Noting that Sprint Galaxy S6 Edge doesn't actually have a locked boot loader by default like the ones those from AT&T and Verizon.  When the OEM unlocking is turned ON, it isn't actually locked-up the boot loader but just locked the device from wiping its data and or modifying the entire OS. This is the same feature  that were also found on T-Mobile Galaxy S6 update which is basically called the Factory Reset Protection (FRP).

The update is now live via Over-The-Air and weighs around 563 MB in file size.

Technical details of the Android 5.1.1 update:

Model number: SM-G925P
Android version: 5.1.1
Baseband version: G925PVPU2BOF7
Kernel version: 3.10.61
Build number:  LMY47X.G925PVPU2BOF7

In most often cases a notification message will directly sent to you by your network provider and by Samsung itself, telling you that there is a new update that has now available for download.  This approach requires you to prepare a strong WiFi connection,  and so it might happened sometimes that one did not receive any software update notification messages; 1) if and when the device is out of range during the software update roll out  period, 2) Automatic update has been turned off in the device Settings.
However, We can still manually check for the update instead.
Here’s how to do it manually:
  • From your Galaxy S6 Home screen tap on Apps.
  • Select the Settings gear icon.
  • Tap About device.
  • Tap Software update.

It will then automatically tells you that a new update is available or your software is up to date when there is none yet.

Sprint Galaxy S6 OTA Update to Lollipop version 5.1.1 G920PVPU2BOF7 Officially Rolling

Sprint Galaxy S6 Android 5.1.1 Lollipop OTA update has just officially released. The Android 5.1.1 update will now bumps the build version to G920PVPU2BOF7 of which replace the before Android 5.0.2 G920PVPU1AOE2.  The latter brings the OEM unlocking feature which is similar to T-Mobile's Galaxy S6 update recently.  Along with the 5.1.1 update are for the device stability improvements, bug fixes and further enhancements to performance.

The OEM unlocking is basically the so-called "boot loader unlocking"  it the new Anti-theft features that holds the Factory Reset Protection in the device.  Sprint Galaxy S6 doesn't typically have a locked boot loader like AT&T, Verizon.  So the lock boot loader features somehow optional to the user. This protects the device from someone and prevent people from  installing a custom recovery, wiping your device. So this should not be an issue with Sprint if the boot loader is not locked.
