OTA update G900FXXS1BPCL on Galaxy S5 SM-G900F, not Android Marshmallow but still Lollipop

While we have been keeping on and tracked down the Galaxy S5 Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update for the last couple months, and yet we have gathered two reported to official updates landed in Latin America  and Korean Galaxy S5 variants.
  1. Galaxy S5 Official Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow Update Finally Released
  2. Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow Update build G900MUBU1CPC3 in Latin America

Today,  the Galaxy S5 SM-G900F international version has received another over the air (OTA) update dubbed with software build version G900FXXS1BPCL. This update is not the much Marshmallow update yet, but the monthly security patch update for the month of April 2016. You may have to take a look at the following technical details below:

Model number: SM-G900F
Android version: 5.0
Baseband version: G900FXXU1BOJ1
Kernel version: 3.4.0-5508620
Build number: LRX21T.G900FXXS1BPCL
Android security patch level: 2016-04-02
Build date: March 04, 2016

AP: G900FXXS1BPCL
CP: G900FXXU1BOJ1
CSC: G900FOXA1BOJ1

As you may noticed it is quite similar the previous released build G900FXXS1BPC3. Like as I have said, it only brings the new security patches and there's nothing more any new features.

Its now hitting the unlocked Galaxy S5 SM-G900F in England as of this time being but might also going to roll out in select countries in Europe these coming couple of days.

Those who have not received the update yet, you folks might better manually check it via Over-the-air (OTA) update or using Kies. Below are the guides that show you the basic  instructions on how to perform a software update on your Samsung Galaxy S5.

How to Update the Samsung Galaxy S5 to Official Android 5.0 Lollipop?

Samsung urges us to prepare the following important notes to consider before performing the software update.  I have also added some useful insights why you should follow this procedure to keep your  phone in safe.

Recharge the phone’s battery – You should make sure your device is fully recharged before performing the software update. Do not also remove the battery during the software update is in progress. A power failure may cause damaged to your device that might result to what we called “soft-bricks”.  If this happened on your device, it may just stuck on Samsung logo or welcome screen and can’t reboot normally.

Backup important data – You should back-up your important files, including contacts, emails, messages, photos, videos, apps and other stuff. Like I said while during software update process is interrupted there is a possibility that your data stored from your device internal SD card may lose or deleted when a sudden unexpected failure happened and it forces you to perform a factory data reset which basically wipes your phone’s memory.

Ensure that your Galaxy S5 should still running in the official Lollipop released build version and hasn’t been rooted – Your device should not be modified or rooted, there are some certain circumstances that a modified and rooted Galaxy S5 SM-G900F may not accept any official software update anymore or it can accept an update but it might harm your device once the update has made. Learn about the new Samsung KNOX security suite. Most known error that says ‘firmware upgrade encountered an issue, please select recovery mode in Kies and try again‘ or “Your device has been modified Software update are not available” you should try to avoid that from happening.

How to Perform an Update via Over-The-Air (OTA)?

This is usually how the carrier branded or locked Samsung Galaxy S5, performs a software update.  This method is Firmware Update through over the air or called as OTA update, which most often  a notification message will directly send out to you from your network provider or Samsung and notifies you that there is a new update available for download.  If you did not receive any notification messages you can manually check for the update instead.  Doing this you may only tap on your Galaxy S5 SM-G900F Settings > About Device, tap Software Update.
  • From the Home screen, touch the Settings icon.
  • Touch About device.
  • Touch Software update.

It will automatically tell you that a new update is available or your software is up to date when there is none yet. You can simply tap install now when you want to perform an update or install later.

How to Update the Galaxy S5 Thru Kies / Smart Switch?

The second method is a firmware update through Samsung Kies / Smart Switch for PC. You may head over to your  local Samsung support page from where you can download Samsung Kies from there, and install it in your Windows or Mac computer. Choose the new Kies 3 which supports the Galaxy S5 SM-G900F and other Samsung devices running with Android 5.0 Lollipop OS .  Once you installed Kies 3, all you need is to connect your Samsung Galaxy S5 SM-G900F to a PC using the USB data cable, then simply run and follow Kies or Smart Switch on-screen’s software update instruction.

  • Build date: 03/19/2016

Here are the initial changelog details  Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update build G925FXXU3DPAD.

Changelog details:

  • OS upgrade to Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.
  • The new TouchWiz provides enhanced usability and an updated visual design.
  • Quick connect helps you easily find and connect to nearby devices and pre-connection.
  • Fingerprints are securely protected. An alternative unlock method (pattern,PIN, or password.
  • Advanced power saving mode restricts background data and extends battery life.
  • New enhanced users interface and a lot more.

The Android Marshmallow firmware itself weights at approximately 1300 MB in file size, and it can be downloaded via Over-The-Air (OTA) and thru Smart Switch for PC. Just make sure your Galaxy S6 and S6 edge hasn't been rooted prior to get the update without any errors.

How to Update the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge to Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow

  • Make sure to recharge your phone first.
  • Do not forget to backup all of the important data that were stored in the device memory.
  • Your Galaxy S6 edge must still run on the official software version and has not been rooted nor installed with non-official firmware.

Update via Over-The-Air (OTA)

This is the usual method on how to check and to perform an update on Galaxy S6 to the latest software version.  This method is what we called Firmware Update  Over-The-Air and so-called as FOTA or simply OTA update. In most often cases, a notification message will be directly sent out to you by your network provider and by Samsung itself, telling you that there is a new update that has now available for download.  This approach requires you to prepare a strong WiFi connection,  and so it might happen sometimes that one did not receive any software update notification messages; (1) If and when the device is out of range during the software update roll out  period, (2) Automatic update has been turned off in the device Settings.
However, We can still manually check for the update instead.

Here’s how to do it manually:
  • From your Galaxy S6 edge’s Home screen tap on Apps.
  • Select the Settings gear icon.
  • Tap About device.
  • Tap Software update.
  • Tap Check for an update.

It will then notify you that a new update is available for download. But it also says that “Your device software is up to date“, and there is no software update is yet available for grab. You can simply choose Install now if you do so or else Install later if you want to get the update in later time.

But if ever you might have had received this message while checking software update that says something like “The operating system on your device has been modified in an unauthorized way. Try downloading software updates using Smart Switch on your computer or visit a customer service center.”  This is a warning message that only appears for those devices that have been rooted and installed with modified and unofficial firmware.  So to be able to get the Software OTA update again, you must Unroot the Galaxy S6  first and removed any modification that has been installed on it.

Update using  a Computer via Smart Switch for PC

Download Smart Switch for PC

You have to choose the one that is specifically built for computer, depends on what you have either a PC or Mac.  Once you installed Smart Switch, all you need to do is to connect your Samsung Galaxy S6 on your  computer using the supplied USB  cable.
  1. Open Smart Switch in your computer.
  2. Connect the Galaxy S6  edge into the computer using the supplied USB data cable.
  3. Smart Switch will automatically prompt you if the update is available. Just click on the “update” then the “OK”  button to begin updating your Galaxy S6 edge.

Once the update has made, you may now check the technical details of the new update, from Home screen  simply touch the Settings gear icon and then tap About device > Software info.

As the Galaxy S5 already started receiving its Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update in Korea earlier last week.  This week, the Latin American version of the Galaxy S5 (SM-G900M) has followed the track and its also receiving its official Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update dubbed with software build G900MUBU1CPC3. This comes as earlier than the international Galaxy S5 SM-G900F as we expected. The said update has landed on unbranded Galaxy S5 (SM-G900M) in Trinidad and Tobago, and some select countries in Latin America alone.

Furthermore, as of this moment there are four Galaxy S5 models already have its Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow treatment. These Galaxy S5 models are the SM-G900L, SM-G900K, SM-G900S and then the SM-G900M recently.  All United States variants like AT&T SM-G900A, T-Mobile SM-G900T, Sprint SM-G900P, Verizon SM-G900V, and US Cellular SM-G900R4 hasn't have any Android M so far. Likewise to Canada's Galaxy S5 SM-G900W8 and Australia's variant the SM-G900I, including the rest of international models such as the SM-G900F, SM-G900FD, SM-G900FQ, SM-G900H,  SM-G900MD were also awaiting its Android M, until now.

Technical details of Galaxy S5 SM-G900M first Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow Update:

Model number: SM-G900M
Android version: 6.0.1 (Marshmallow)
Android security patch level: 2016-03-01

Baseband version: G900MUBU1CPC3
Kernel version: 3.4.0-7500820
Build number: MMB29M.G900MUBU1CPC3
Build date: 12 March, 2016

AP: G900MUBU1CPC3

As you may noticed, this Android Marshmallow updates is also equipped with an updated version of Android security patch to which has bumped its level to March 01, 2016.
The new features of the said Android Marshmallow OS are as follows:

Changelog details:

  • OS upgrade to Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.
  • The new TouchWiz provides enhanced usability and an updated visual design.
  • Quick connect helps you easily find and connect to nearby devices and pre-connection.
  • Fingerprints are securely protected. An alternative unlock method (pattern,PIN, or password.
  • Advanced power saving mode restricts background data and extends battery life.
  • New enhanced users interface and a lot more.

How to Update the Galaxy S5 to Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow

You may head over to your  local Samsung support page from where you can download Samsung Kies/Smart Spwith for PC from there, and install it in your Windows or Mac computer. Once you installed Kies or Smart Switch for PC, all you need is to connect your Samsung Galaxy S5  to your PC using the USB data cable, then simply run and follow Kies or Smart Switch on-screen’s software update instruction.

Here are the initial changelog details of what are new features and or enhancements found in the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update.

Furthermore, you may notice that  the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow offers a much more consistent and well-optimized users interface (UI) as Samsung has focused on user experience and the device performance, instead of adding more applications. You can expect a lightning fast response time speed and less lagging while opening dialer, camera, apps and switching two applications at a time.

Again, the roll out began in India, this is the first build yet, so there is nothing to rush in. As I said earlier, it will surely continue to roll out to other countries any time soon. The Android Marshmallow firmware itself weights at around 2 GB in file size, and it can be downloaded via Over-The-Air (OTA) and thru Smart Switch for PC.

How to Update the Galaxy S6  to Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow

  • Make sure to recharge your phone first.
  • Do not forget to backup all of the important data that were stored in the device memory.
  • Your Galaxy S6 must still run on the official software version and has not been rooted nor installed with non-official firmware.

Updating the Galaxy S6 via Over-The-Air (OTA)

  • From your Galaxy S6 Home screen tap on Apps.

Update the Galaxy S6 using  a Computer via Smart Switch for PC

Download Smart Switch for PC

You have to choose the one that is specifically built for computer, depends on what you have either a PC or Mac.  Once you installed Smart Switch, all you need to do is to connect your Samsung Galaxy S6 on your  computer using the supplied USB  cable.
  1. Open Smart Switch in your computer.
  2. Connect the Galaxy S6  into the computer using the supplied USB data cable.
  3. Smart Switch will automatically prompt you if the update is available. Just click on the “update” then the “OK”  button to begin updating your Galaxy S6.

Once the update is made, you may now check the technical details of the new update, from Home screen  simply touch the Settings gear icon and then tap About device.

Both of this update were released on both unlocked and carrier locked Galaxy S5 in Europe and Middle East region.

  • From your Galaxy S6 Home screen tap on Apps.
