In most often cases, a notification message will be directly sent out to you by your network provider and by Samsung itself, telling you that there is a new update that has now available for download.  This approach requires you to prepare a strong WiFi connection,  and so it might happen sometimes that one did not receive any software update notification messages; (1) If and when the device is out of range during the software update roll out  period, (2) Automatic update has been turned off in the device Settings. However, We can still manually check for the update instead. Here’s how to do it manually:
    • From your Galaxy S6 edge+ Home screen tap on Apps.
    • Select the Settings gear icon.
    • Tap About device.
    • Tap Software update.
    • Tap Check for an update.
It will then notify you that a new update is available for download. But it also says that “Your device software is up to date“, and there is no software update is yet available for grab. You can simply choose Install now if you do so or else Install later if you want to get the update in later time. But if ever you might have had received this message while checking software update that says something like “The operating system on your device has been modified in an unauthorized way. Try downloading software updates using Smart Switch on your computer or visit a customer service center.”  This is a warning message that only appears for those devices that have been rooted and installed with modified and unofficial firmware.  So to be able to get the Software OTA update again, you must Unroot the Galaxy S6 edge first, and or removed any modification that has been installed in it.

Galaxy S5 SM-G900H September Security Patch Update G900HXXU1CPH5

Samsung has been continually rolled out the monthly Android security maintenance update for the Galaxy S5. This time the "Exynos" version of the Galaxy S5 (the SM-G900H) has gotten its September security patch update.  This update will move up the said device current Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow OS of to build version  G900HXXU1CPH5.  However, the update is initially released in India at this time being, but might as well also available in other countries very soon.

Here are the technical details of  the said update build version G900HXXU1CPH5 to which can be viewed via Settings > About device.
    •  Device: Samsung Galaxy S5 SM-G900H
    • Android version: 6.0.1 (Marshmallow)
    • Android Security Patch level: Septmeber 1, 2016
    • Baseband version: G900HXXU1CPCA
    • Kernel version: 3.10.9-7760371
    • Build number: MMB29K.G900HXXU1CPH5

This update will replace the previously released build version G900HXXU1CPE6 way back in May. Below, is the step-by-step guide on how to get the Marshmallow September security patch update for your Galaxy S5 SM-G900H device.

How to Update the Samsung Galaxy S5 to Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow?

Samsung urges us to prepare the following important notes to consider before performing the software update.  I have also added some useful insights why you should follow this procedure to keep your  phone in safe.

Recharge the phone’s battery – You should make sure your device is fully recharged before performing the software update. Do not also remove the battery during the software update is in progress. A power failure may cause damaged to your device that might result to what we called “soft-bricks”.  If this happened on your device, it may just stuck on Samsung logo or welcome screen and can’t reboot normally.

Backup important data – You should back-up your important files, including contacts, emails, messages, photos, videos, apps and other stuff. Like I said while during software update process is interrupted there is a possibility that your data stored from your device internal SD card may lose or deleted when a sudden unexpected failure happened and it forces you to perform a factory data reset which basically wipes your phone’s memory.

Ensure that your Galaxy S5 should still running in an official or factory firmware and hasn’t been rooted nor modified – Your device should not be modified or rooted, there are some certain circumstances that a modified and rooted Galaxy S5 SM-G900H may not accept any official software update anymore or it can accept an update but it might harm your device once the update has made. Learn about the new Samsung KNOX security suite. Most known error that says ‘firmware upgrade encountered an issue, please select recovery mode in Kies and try again‘ or “Your device has been modified Software update are not available” you should try to avoid that from happening.

How to Perform an Update via Over-The-Air (OTA)?

This is usually how the carrier branded or locked Samsung Galaxy S5, performs a software update.  This method is Firmware Update through over the air or called as OTA update, which most often  a notification message will directly send out to you from your network provider or Samsung and notifies you that there is a new update available for download.  If you did not receive any notification messages you can manually check for the update instead.  Doing this you may only tap on your Galaxy S5 SM-G900H Settings >About Device > Software Update.
    • From the Home screen, touch the Settings icon.
    • Touch About device.
    • Touch Software update.

It will automatically tell you that a new update is available or your software is up to date when there is none yet. You can simply tap install now when you want to perform an update or install later.

How to Update the Galaxy S5 Thru Kies / Smart Switch?

The second method is a firmware update through Samsung Kies / Smart Switch for PC. You may head over to your  local Samsung support page from where you can download Samsung Kies from there, and install it in your Windows or Mac computer. Choose the new Kies 3 which supports the Galaxy S5 SM-G900H and other Samsung devices running with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow OS .  Once you installed Kies / Smart Switch, all you need is connect your Samsung Galaxy S5 into your PC using the USB data cable, then simply run and follow Kies or Smart Switch on-screen’s software update instruction.

For those who have a rooted Galaxy S5, you folks might need to download the G900HXXU1CPH5 stock firmware itself, as you may no longer get the Over The air update as long as your device has been modified – Galaxy S5 SM-G900H Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow Firmware.  So the only way to upgrade your phone to Marshmallow is to manually install the official Android 6.0.1 Marsmallow firmware itself. This process will completely unroot and remove any modification in your Galaxy S5 phone and restores it back to its official or factory default firmware.

Ensure that your Galaxy S5 should still running in an official or factory firmware and hasn’t been rooted nor modified – Your device should not be modified or rooted, there are some certain circumstances that a modified and rooted Galaxy S5 SM-G900T may not accept any official software update anymore or it can accept an update but it might harm your device once the update has made.

Doing this you may only tap on your Galaxy S5 SM-G900T Settings >About Device > Software Update.

Choose the new Kies 3 which supports the Galaxy S5 SM-G900T and other Samsung devices running with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow OS .  Once you installed Kies / Smart Switch, all you need is connect your Samsung Galaxy S5 into your PC using the USB data cable, then simply run and follow Kies or Smart Switch on-screen’s software update instruction.

All of the above released builds are exactly alike when we are going to compare the "kernel version"  being used on each build. The G920FXXS4DPG2 and  G925FXXS4DPG2  were massively rolled out to most of the European countries. The only differences to other builds might have affect some technicalities to some countries like the G920FXXS4DPG3, and  G925FXXS4DPG3 were sent out in Luxembourg alone. While the  G920FXXU4DPG8, and G925FXXU4DPG8 landed in the The Netherlands, and Switzerland. And lastly, the G920FXXS4DPG9, and  G925FXXS4DPG9 were also exclusively released in Spain's Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge users.

Australia's Galaxy S6 and S6 edge haven't gotten  the July Security patch update but it might receive the August Security patch update as early as possible.

Unfortunately, the Galaxy S6 Edge+ SM-G928I has showed no movements so far, as there were no newer updates related to the July's Security patch as of this time being. It might soon arrive this coming few days, or it might also skip the July's update and are now queued to the August security patch.

How to Update Sprint Galaxy S5 Sport G860P to Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow

Samsung always advises us to prepare the following important notes to consider before performing the software update. I have also added some useful insights why you should follow this procedures to keep your phone in safe.

Recharge the phone’s battery – You should make sure your device is fully recharged before performing the software update. Do not also remove the battery during the software update is in progress. A power failures may cause damaged to your device that might results as we so-called “soft-bricks”. If this happens your device may just stuck on Samsung logo or welcome screen and can’t reboot normally.

Follow the guide here if you don’t yet on how to backup data on your Sprint Galaxy S5 Sport.

Your Galaxy S5 Sport should not been rooted – Your device should not been modified or rooted, there is a certain circumstances that a modified and rooted Sprint Galaxy S5 Sport may not accept any official software update anymore or it can accept an update but it might harm your device once the update has made. Learn about the new Samsung KNOX security suite. Most known error that says ‘firmware upgrade encountered an issue, please select recovery mode in kies and try again‘ or “Your device has been modified Software update are not available” you should try to avoid that from happening.

    Update via Over-The-Air (OTA)

Samsung Galaxy S5 OTA Update This is usually how the carrier branded or locked Samsung Galaxy S5, performs a software update. This method is Firmware Update through over the air or called as OTA update, which usually a notification message will directly sent to you from your network provider or Samsung and notifies you that there is a new update available for download. If you did not received any notification messages you can manually check fro the update instead. Doing this you may only tap on your Sprint Galaxy S5 Sport G860P Settings>>About Device, tap Software Update.
    • Find “Software update”
    • Slide your finger down the display starting from the top edge of your mobile phone.
    • Tap the settings icon.
    • Tap About device.
    • Tap Software update.

It will automatically tells you that a new update is available or your software is up to date when there is none yet. You can simply tap install now when you want to perform an update or install later.
