Galaxy S6 & S6 Edge Android Marshmallow Security Patch Update for May2016

The Samsung Galaxy S6,S6 Edge, and the Galaxy S6 Edge+ (plus) has been receiving simultaneous Android Marshmallow software updates. As the update's has been continually rolling out, some folks might have asked why are these updates keeps on coming in. Well, those updates were just basically the monthly security patch for the Android OS.  Google has been releasing these Security Patch updates ever since they've found out these  said Android vulnerabilities.

Most of these updates are newer builds but it will not bring any new features to the latest Android Marshmallow OS. However,  It will of course brings more additional security enhancements, some bug fixes, and further stability to the device Android Marshmallow OS.

As you might have already noticed the "Android Security Patch level" that has been added and indicated in the device OS since February 2016.  This security patch level changes in a monthly basis if and when there are new update arrives.  You can view this in the phone's software details via settings itself, from the Home screen, just tap on Apps, then  Settings, and About device.

So if your Galxy S6, S6 Edge, and or S6 Edge+ have just received the Android Marshmallow within the month of May and up to the first week of June, you might see that the Android Security Patch level indicated in your phone is May 1, 2016.

Samsung Galaxy S5 SM-G900H Marshmallow Update G900HXXU1CPE6, 1st Official Android 6.0.1 Release

Ensure that your Galaxy S5 should still running in an official or factory firmware and hasn’t been rooted nor modified – Your device should not be modified or rooted, there are some certain circumstances that a modified and rooted Galaxy S5 SM-G900H may not accept any official software update anymore or it can accept an update but it might harm your device once the update has made. Learn about the new Samsung KNOX security suite. Most known error that says ‘firmware upgrade encountered an issue, please select recovery mode in Kies and try again‘ or “Your device has been modified Software update are not available” you should try to avoid that from happening.

How to Perform an Update via Over-The-Air (OTA)?

This is usually how the carrier branded or locked Samsung Galaxy S5, performs a software update.  This method is Firmware Update through over the air or called as OTA update, which most often  a notification message will directly send out to you from your network provider or Samsung and notifies you that there is a new update available for download.  If you did not receive any notification messages you can manually check for the update instead.  Doing this you may only tap on your Galaxy S5 SM-G900H Settings >About Device > Software Update.

• From the Home screen, touch the Settings icon.

It will automatically tell you that a new update is available or your software is up to date when there is none yet. You can simply tap install now when you want to perform an update or install later.

How to Update the Galaxy S5 Thru Kies / Smart Switch?

The second method is a firmware update through Samsung Kies / Smart Switch for PC. You may head over to your  local Samsung support page from where you can download Samsung Kies from there, and install it in your Windows or Mac computer. Choose the new Kies 3 which supports the Galaxy S5 SM-G900H and other Samsung devices running with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow OS .  Once you installed Kies / Smart Switch, all you need is connect your Samsung Galaxy S5 into your PC using the USB data cable, then simply run and follow Kies or Smart Switch on-screen’s software update instruction.

For those who have a rooted Galaxy S5, you folks might need to download the G900HXXU1CPE6 stock firmware itself, as you may no longer get the Over The air update as long as your device has been modified – Galaxy S5 SM-G900H Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow Firmware.  So the only way to upgrade your phone to Marshmallow is to manually install the official Android 6.0.1 Marsmallow firmware itself. This process will completely unroot and remove any modification in your Galaxy S5 phone and restores it back to its official or factory default firmware.

This is the usual method on how to check and to perform an update on Galaxy S6 edge  to the latest software version.  This method is what we called Firmware Update  Over-The-Air and so-called as FOTA or simply OTA update. In most often cases, a notification message will be directly sent out to you by your network provider and by Samsung itself, telling you that there is a new update that has now available for download.  This approach requires you to prepare a strong WiFi connection,  and so it might happen sometimes that one did not receive any software update notification messages; (1) If and when the device is out of range during the software update roll out  period, (2) Automatic update has been turned off in the device Settings.

Downgrade Galaxy S6,S6 edge, S6 edge+ from Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow to 5.1.1 Lollipop, Yes You Can!

There has been a lot of questions via our contact page surrounding the Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, and even the Galaxy S6 Edge+ Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow updates. Some folks may not conveniently  satisfied how's the Marshmallow performed according to their own experienced. Some may complain about some lag issues, whilst others complained about some of their daily used or important   apps that may not tend to work any longer.

Majority of these folks were asking if they just can temporarily downgrade back their devices from Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop just like the way it was before but may then get back to Marshmallow until it stabilized further.

You can do read these Marshmallow issues in forums and social media.   Now, to keep this post short and straight forward, "Can we really downgrade our Galaxy S6, S6 edge, and S6 edge+ from Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow back to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop?"
The Answer is; Yes you can! This can only be done on international Galaxy S6, S6 edge, S6 Edge+ plus variants, including the American and Canadian version, but except to those device with built in "locked bootlooader" such as the Verizon and AT&T Galaxy S6, S6 edge and S6 Edge+ models. Devices with unlocked bootloaders can be freely downgrade-able, but those with highly secured bootloader cannot be messed around.

Please do note that this is only applicable for the first Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update your device received.  This is not advisable to any newer OTA updates that may have a locked-up bootloader.

Sprint Galaxy S5 Update G900PVPU3CPG1 July Android Security Patch and Several Fixes

Samsung has just started  rolling out the July Android Security Patch for the Sprint Galaxy S5 (SM-G900P). The update has bumped up the Android 6.0.1 Marsmallow OS to build version G900PVPU3CPG1 from the current build version G900PVPS3CPE2. Along with July security patch, there are also several fixes included in it to address to some certain issues such as the Short code messaging, and SOS message feature. The Kineto client is also being updated for more stability.

This  update is at its phased released, and  it may take into several days to completely arrive on all Galaxy S5 owners. Yet,  if you haven’t received the notification message, you may manually check the update from time to time until it tells you that the new update is available for grab. Simply just tap on your Galaxy S5  Settings > About device > Software update > Check for update.

Also, keep in mind that you can only get the new update if your device has not been rooted and or currently running on a modified firmware.  You must unroot your device first before taking an OTA update so your device may not get into any issues.

T-Mobile Galaxy S6 Edge+ Marshmallow Update to build G928TUVU2DPD1 Rolling Out Begins

T-Mobile has just started rolling out the long-awaited Marshmallow update to Galaxy S6 edge+ (SM-G928T) in the United States. The update has bumped up the software build to  G928TUVU2DPD1, to which is based in Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow (MMB29K).   It may have been taking quite some time before it's released but an update is an update, and is finally here. Before that T-Mobile have had made an announcements that this update went into some sort of testing process before its approval and distribution period. Noting that the Marshmallow update on T-Mobile Galaxy S6 (to G920TUVU3EPD1) and S6 edge (to G925TUVU3EPD1) have been released earlier in April.

Updating the Galaxy S6 edge+ via Over-The-Air (OTA)

This is the usual method on how to check and to perform an update on Galaxy S6 edge  to the latest software version.  This method is what we called Firmware Update  Over-The-Air and so-called as FOTA or simply OTA update. In most often cases, a notification message will be directly sent out to you by your network provider and by Samsung itself, telling you that there is a new update that has now available for download.  This approach requires you to prepare a strong WiFi connection,  and so it might happen sometimes that one did not receive any software update notification messages; (1) If and when the device is out of range during the software update roll out  period, (2) Automatic update has been turned off in the device Settings.
However, We can still manually check for the update instead.

Here’s how to do it manually:

• From your Galaxy S6 edge Home screen tap on Apps.
• Select the Settings gear icon.
• Tap About device.
• Tap Software update.
• Tap Check for an update.

It will then notify you that a new update is available for download. But it also says that “Your device software is up to date“, and there is no software update is yet available for grab. You can simply choose Install now if you do so or else Install later if you want to get the update in later time.

But if ever you might have had received this message while checking software update that says something like “The operating system on your device has been modified in an unauthorized way. Try downloading software updates using Smart Switch on your computer or visit a customer service center.”  This is a warning message that only appears for those devices that have been rooted and installed with modified and unofficial firmware.  So to be able to get the Software OTA update again, you must Unroot the Galaxy S6 edge first, and or removed any modification that has been installed in it.

Update the Galaxy S6 edge+ using Smart Switch for PC

You have to choose the one that is specifically built for computer, depends on what you have either a PC or Mac.  Once you installed Smart Switch, all you need to do is to connect your Samsung Galaxy S6 on your  computer using the supplied USB  cable.

1. Open Smart Switch in your computer.
2. Connect the Galaxy S6  into the computer using the supplied USB data cable.
3. Smart Switch will automatically prompt you if the update is available. Just click on the “update” then the “OK”  button to begin updating your Galaxy S6.
